Beluga, Claremont

Image
I may not be a massive footy fan, but I'm already a fan of Beluga. Was there a couple of weeks ago for a short lunch with my bestie. Without much expectation, the restaurant was full of local patrons, dress to impress while catching up with their friends. It is Claremont afterall, you gotta show some diamonds, branded handbags and wears designer dresses to dine here. It might sound clich é  for those of us that doesn't really fit into the criteria. However, the staff never show unfairness while serving people like us. Rich ladies chit-chatting away We didn't make any reservation, so we got a table outside under the sun watching passerby walking along The Lane at Claremont Quarter. It is not a bad place to be while the sun is still up, although the chilly wind creeps into my skin constantly. The Lane at Claremont Quarter Instantly, we got the wine list and menu for our perusal. The supervisor explained to us that their wine list works slightly different, they don...

Star Anise

Image
Before Chef David Coomer opens up Pata Negra and before Restaurant Amuse being on the talk list of "Restaurant must visit in Perth", Star Anise was once the talk of the town and also one of the top 5 restaurant in Perth. After listen to my colleague animated description on how good the food was, I've decide to bring my best mate for her birthday dinner together with another friend. Thank god we've made a reservation, as this small little restaurant quickly filled up by diners waiting to enjoy good food created by team David Coomer.  The dining room is quite small, but was decorated with lots of modern-Asian inspired decorations such as bamboo and wooden cupboard; just like their menu, it is modern and Asian inspired. Warm lighting and soft-textured elements like curtains making it quite an intimate place to bring your love ones for dinner. Having said that, most of the table were set up for big groups too. Service was prompt, as we seated, water was offered and ...

Flutes Restaurant, Brookland Valley, Margaret River

Image
I've always love going to restaurant in a winery, especially when i'm in the region. It's the best place to taste the best of everything in the region. A while back, me and my family went down to Margaret River for a road trip (there were 14 of us and they were all travelled from Malaysia), I thought why not try lunch at one of the winery restaurant, it will be a great way to introduce the wine and the Modern Australian cuisine to them. And I suggested to try Flutes Restaurant at Brookland Valley, reason being that the restaurant is overlooking the lake and the vineyard, and of course the menu sounds good and not overly priced, plus I've got 10% discount using EatingWA VIP card. I've made reservation for 14 of us on a Tuesday lunch, most restaurant would have asked if a big group like that to go for a set menu, instead they didn't mention anything about set menu on the phone and were fine with us having a la carte. That's what I wanted anyway, to sample ...

Chanterelle at Jessica's

Image
If you're a massive seafood lover like I do and love old school classic European cooking style, this is a place for you! We got to know this place from the entertainment book, without much expectation we thought to give it a try, since it's located in Hyatt Hotel. We searched high and low in Hyatt, only to know that they are not part of Hyatt Hotel group. They are in fact, just next to the hotel courtyard! If you go in from Terrace Rd, you would have easily locate them. We doubt for abit, once we step our foot in, the place was empty (it was a Tuesday arvo)! I wondered if they were open *gasp!*. Soon after, someone came out and greet us. Awards plaque, dated decor and furnitures, water tank with live seafood.  Gold plate awards plaque were all over the wall, that's a good sign, but some of them were dated back to 1996, i wonder if they are still any good today. Decor and furniture was kinda dated, you felt like you have just walk into your grannies favourite restaura...

Black Swan Winery & Restaurant

Image
Got to know this place from a friend of mine, telling me that they serve black pig here, and according to her  "the black pig was so tender and soft, the ratio of fats and meats is just right to salivate your entire palette, the flavour from the fat oozes out, going around your mouth, makes you crave for more, it was the best porky moment of my life" - And that was few years ago. After hearing this, i suggest that we visit this place for black pig salivating moment and also do some wine tasting while we're in the valley. It was a beautiful spring day when a group of us visited, included the friend of mine who wants to indulge into the black pork again! We started off the morning with some coffee tasting from Yahava koffee , chocolate tasting from Margaret River Chocolate Factory , wine and beer tasting from various winery/brewery before heading up to Black Swan Winery. After much drinking, we were so hungry and can't wait to chow down a whole black pig!  We wer...

Twisted Fork

Image
A little cosy restaurant that is tucked away from all the limelights along Stirling Highway or Cottesloe area. This tiny little restaurant here is on the ever quiet Glyde St, Mosman Park. Just walk across the road, you'll find Tsunami, another restaurant that is serving French and Japanese fusion food, and that's the hype about that street. Anyway, Twisted Fork was featured on the Gourmet Traveller's restaurant guide 2009 but it wasn't featured on the 2010's guide. I wondered if they have done something not so right that keeps them out of the guide. However, i went there with an open mind and see what's there has to offer. This pocket-sized restaurant has it's own character; white French door, tainted wall, crisp white linen, down-ward spotlight, brown chairs, mirrors and clipboard menu. Sounds familiar? A bit like Cantina 663 on Beaufort St? Yea, just a bit, but Twisted Fork has a more casual, matured but homely feel to it. We were served warm fluffy...
