Great Mellie

Image
While restaurant along South Terrace in Fremantle were bustling with diners feast upon pasta and pizza, the rest of Freo is as quiet as if the earth just stop spinning. If not for the great ratings on Urbanspoon , I wouldn't have thought of dining in this hole-in-the-wall French restaurant on High Street. Hallway leading to the toilet, on the wall were newspaper and magazine clippings. French born owner and chef Frederic Verschoore spent years training and working in a 3 Michelin-star restaurant in France, then spent more than 10 years abroad in Hong-Kong and Japan. After all these years of training and working in city that never sleeps, he finally settled in our humble port city and opened up his own restaurant.     Dining hall  Great Mellie is a 40 seated small restaurant, comfortable sized clothed table, old-fashioned chairs, paintings from artists and a cave-like 3D structured wall (that reminds me of Djimbaran in Myaree, maybe they were using the same cont...

Restaurant Amuse

Image
This is my way overdue procrastinated post on Restaurant Amuse, went there for Degustation dinner this time last year on my birthday. The content might be dated, but within this year, Restaurant Amuse has been doing a pretty good job, heck they have done a better job now and the standard is no doubt one of the best in town.  I recently found the menu for my dinner that night and also the notes that i've written down while eating (there were so many courses, it helps to remember what we've eaten). As we all know, Restaurant Amuse is one of WA best restaurant that offers great gastronomical experience, impeccable and professional service from the staff and a place for romantic dinner. We went for the full degustation with matching wine, it was only $115pp (food only) a year ago, but this year they have only increase the price by $5, so not much of a difference. We also uses the entertainment book discount card, it made the dinner more worthwhile. We were seated at one dar...

Star Anise

Image
Before Chef David Coomer opens up Pata Negra and before Restaurant Amuse being on the talk list of "Restaurant must visit in Perth", Star Anise was once the talk of the town and also one of the top 5 restaurant in Perth. After listen to my colleague animated description on how good the food was, I've decide to bring my best mate for her birthday dinner together with another friend. Thank god we've made a reservation, as this small little restaurant quickly filled up by diners waiting to enjoy good food created by team David Coomer.  The dining room is quite small, but was decorated with lots of modern-Asian inspired decorations such as bamboo and wooden cupboard; just like their menu, it is modern and Asian inspired. Warm lighting and soft-textured elements like curtains making it quite an intimate place to bring your love ones for dinner. Having said that, most of the table were set up for big groups too. Service was prompt, as we seated, water was offered and ...

Flutes Restaurant, Brookland Valley, Margaret River

Image
I've always love going to restaurant in a winery, especially when i'm in the region. It's the best place to taste the best of everything in the region. A while back, me and my family went down to Margaret River for a road trip (there were 14 of us and they were all travelled from Malaysia), I thought why not try lunch at one of the winery restaurant, it will be a great way to introduce the wine and the Modern Australian cuisine to them. And I suggested to try Flutes Restaurant at Brookland Valley, reason being that the restaurant is overlooking the lake and the vineyard, and of course the menu sounds good and not overly priced, plus I've got 10% discount using EatingWA VIP card. I've made reservation for 14 of us on a Tuesday lunch, most restaurant would have asked if a big group like that to go for a set menu, instead they didn't mention anything about set menu on the phone and were fine with us having a la carte. That's what I wanted anyway, to sample ...
